I just fixed my daughter's Shuffle... it's a couple years old, 2nd gen. She was having the orange-green blinking light problem and it wouldn't play. It WAS recognized in iTunes though... also showing up in Windows Vista as a mass storage device (huh?? oh well) I simply went into the settings tab in iTunes and did a restore and also had it update the firmware to the newest. Taadaa... mommy is a genius as far as she is concerned! I realize this won't work if iTunes is not recognizing your iPod, but it's something to try if it is and nothing else has worked. Also, be sure you are always disconnecting it properly. I know it kind of seems like a silly thing but it CAN cause problems with the files.

Hi all,

I've had nothing but problems with my shuffle. Can't sync. Constantly flashing yellow light. Itunes won't or can't find it.

I'm packing it up to return it as we speak. Never EVER will I buy an Apple product again. There is simply NO support from them.

Yeah, regular/generic usb chargers need a little hack in order to work with ipods, only 2 resistors needed to be added in between:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Modify_a_generic_USB_car_charger_to_charge_a_3rd_g/

However, all new generic usb chargers should bypass this problem already.
Hope this work for you. It really worked for me :)

Same problem here. I found out that my ipod shuffle only charges when connected to my macbook pro and to the Apple USB charger (orange and then green light). But not in a cheap usb charger I got from ebay and my windows laptop (I only get blinking orange light and then nothing).
I agree with MJ that greedy Apple just wants us to spend more money in their products than give us a full compatible product, after all it's a usb charging and a tiny battery so there should be no excuse for not to be able to charge it with the old usb adapters. Bastards!

Nothing new with me here. Just having the same damn problem as everyone else in getting my shuffle to charge, and looking for ways to resolve it. The idea that you would plug in the shuffle as directed only to have it not charge is infuriating and pathetic. Looks like Apple chose once again to engineer this product to benefit Apple rather than the customer. What a surprise!
